Yaya Han 2014 Calendar

New costume yay! I made this costume in time for Comic Con and had a blast wearing it!

Character: Phoenix Force Jean Grey
Game: Marvel Avengers Alliance
costume made/modeled by Yaya Han
photographed by Patrick Calilung…

Construction notes:
I loved that Phoenix finally got some armor! The design for this costume looks like this:…

I concentrated on the armor first. I made a pattern for the chest piece by measuring and drawing out pieces on paper, then fitting and altering them until I was happy with the pattern. Same for the shoulder pauldrons. Using the paper patterns, I made the pieces out of Worbla with foam in between each base layer. Using the Phoenix bird theme as inspiration, I added stylized design details to the armor for more texture and depth. You can see progress on the armor pieces here:…

I painted the pieces after filler priming them.…

I sewed the bodysuit from 2 different types of stretch pleather, made all the straps with buckles, sash & accessories.
The wig came from Arda!

More photos coming soon, as I receive them!

BTW - The amount of spam now on dA is abhorring! I'm really very shocked by how much of this is getting through the security filter.

Too be honest I thought this was your design at first ! I then clicked where you said the design came from and I just thought how gorgeous she looked . Then I went back and I thought how gorgeous you looked too. I think it would have been cooler if you added special effects but it still looks great Yaya keep up the great work.

Amazing costume + super sexy girl(you) = Epic-mega WIN.

Ps. You were in Super Power Beat Down. They asked you about Who would win-Wolverine or Predator and you say Wolverine. And you are right. Logan wins. Not mention that you locks awsome in that.

Yaya made the costume to have more visible cleavage than in the real concept artwork. She's always talking about how female cosplayers shouldn't depend on sexualizing their costume, but she puts cleavage in almost all of her cosplay. Yes they're good, and very well-made outfits, but she shouldn't be a hypocrite and tell other girls not to show too much cleavage, navel, or thighs, when she does it herself, with mainly... well... her boobs.
examples where cleavage/thighs were not needed:
Chun Li (that's not even Chun Li's outfit ._ .)
Her OC "Power Girl"
her Rarity cosplay (the dress stops when her thighs start? . -.)
Misato Katsuragi
Fiora (I play fiora in LoL some, and I can tell you that her armor is NOT that low cut.)

If Yaya doesn't want to be known for her oversized breasts, I'm thinking that the self-proclaimed "Ambassador of Cosplay" is going to have to start ranging in different genders, rather then staying with cleavage-bound women. But we all know she won't, she can't sexualize that kind of cosplay at all.

Before you come around with some "comeback", to stick up for a girl that has enough self confidence to fuel 1,000 models, who will never care about you personally:

-Yes I do enjoy her cosplays, they're very well made (as I stated above)
-NO. I do not think that she over-sexualizes ALL of her cosplays.
-Actually, yes, I do believe she purposefully picks the more sexualized fan-outfit so she can show her cleavage. (Chun Li, for example)
-Do I think she's a hypocrite? Yes, very much so.
-Do I hate her? No. Not at all, she's done nothing to me.
-Am I jealous of her? No. Why would I be jealous? I'm a 15 year old kid, who doesn't even want to cosplay that often, I only ever do it with my friends for fun.
-"you're only upset because you're probably ugly BLAH BLAH" Yaya and I aren't even of the same ethnic group. I'm not asian, therefore, why would I want to look/be jealous of an asian?
-No this isn't a hate comment. I've favorited the deviation. As I've said 2 times above, it's well made. There's not doubt about that.

This comment is, simply that, a comment.

Anyhow, byebye. ^-^

I agree with you as well, I also like Yaya she's a great cosplayer and i find she and the other cosplayers help the "normal" people become more understanding and accepting of cosplay culture. My mum and dad didn't even know what cosplay really was (besides dressing up and being nerdy) until they started watching the show.

I think you're thinking about this too much. Over sexuality in costumes might not be for you, but Yaya here seems to enjoy it, so why shouldn't she make her costumes they way she likes? I agree that female cosplayers shouldn't feel pressured to have their costumes be "sexy" or revealing if they're not comfortable doing so, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't make their cosplays sexy if that's what they like doing. Yaya is an incredibly talented designer and craftswoman, and if she's comfortable dressing a certain way, then that should be respected as well. I'm sure she knows that people are going to (immaturely) comment on her ta-tas, but maybe she just doesn't care?

I'm not "sticking up" for this cosplayer personally, although I do admire her skill and dedication to her craft, I'm saying that when it comes to cosplayers--and anyone--making choices about their clothing. While someone's choices may not be ones you might make, there's no reason to force your ideas about what's acceptable onto them. Want to show your boobs? Go ahead. Want to not show your boobs? Go for it. It's all good.
Fliputan Featured By Owner Oct 2, 2013  Student General Artist
I under stand what you're saying but it's when she says to other female cosplayers not to sexualize their outfit, when she does it herself. That's what gets me annoyed. (._ .;; )
Moon-Phace Featured By Owner Oct 2, 2013  Professional Traditional Artist
Well, that would make sense, then. It is hypocritical to tell someone to specifically not do something and then do it yourself. I have never seen this happen, but if it's true, then it's a bit odd. Although I would say that it also depends on the character being played. I don't know. I don't think there's anything wrong either way--although I would have an issue with, say, the sexualization of a child character or something, because that would be creepy. But I understand where you're coming from as well.
Fliputan Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2013  Student General Artist
She says it on a few posts and on the tv show she works as a a judge on but then turns around and does it in a lot of the listed cosplays above.
And as for "children" she kind of did it with her rarity cosplay... A children's show PONY shouldn't be as mature as she made that cosplay to be... I mean like... You wouldn't even get away with wearing that kind of thing to a school let alone a kids' show..

Again, don't get me wrong she's VERY good at what she does, she's just a little hypocritical..

I can understand that point of view.

OC power girl? original character? power girl is from DC comics ->…

And just saying, as a simple comment, whether or not that was a "hate comment" it didnt need to be said on here. Ethnicity has nothing to do with being beautiful or ugly nor jealously.

Anywho, try keeping your comments a bit more PC.

Fliputan Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2013  Student General Artist
Ah, I didn't know of that character, I'm more of a Marvel& Dark Horse person ^-^
Also, if you had read more carefully, I said "look like". I never doubted she was beautiful ^-^, but I'm not jealous because I'm not, 1, a cosplayer nor am I, 2,of Asian ethnicity.

Also, I don't need to be politically correct to make you happy
If you have a problem with that, just ignore my opinion. but you probably couldn't do that anyhowBecause that's what it was. If I insulted you somehow by making a generalization by saying Yaya will probably never care about you as an individual, I apologize. Although, that should be obvious.
immortalrae Featured By Owner Sep 15, 2013  Professional General Artist

Yes, which is why you should research your examples. Just like the Misaki cosplay was based on a design on a character statchue.

I am not saying anything about Yayas beauty and I didnt question you saying that either. I just said you shouldnt have brought up race as a part of being people saying your jealous, which I am NOT saying. If YOU read more carefully. I dont care about your ethnicity, or Yayas, you both living beings? Yes then thats enough that you should want to be courteous.

And not just me, this is a public site and as such you should censor yourself a bit better so as not to offend anyone, pass on rude statements, and basically create hate comments and I never questioned that Yaya would care about me anymore then anyone else, so I have no idea why youre bringing that up...? I dont even care that this was said at Yaya, I care that it got said at all, the race thing, because given what you said, if she was of your ethnicity you would be jealous, and thats just wrong.

that is interesting that you say that, because i see two arms and legs not to mention a head, hair, hands, feet, clothes, and a woman who has worked really hard on her cosplay. she cannot help the fact that she is a female that has breasts and she knows how to dress up conforming to her own body type. yes she has breasts, very sound observation, but there is more to a human being than that and she should not be ashamed because they are presented. she looks gorgeous and has put a lot into her costume and photograph, she is not just boobs.
