Empyrean Eyes by yayacosplay Empyrean Eyes by yayacosplay

Preview shot from my recent photoshoot with LA Fashion Photographer Aileen Luib.

The outfit I'm wearing is the original Peacock costume I designed and made. I also did the hair (well, wig styling) and makeup. For those who are wondering about the gold lips - I used MAC Amber Lights eyeshadow mixed with clear lipgloss ^_-

I really adore the haunting melancholic quality of this photo. From Aileen's portfolio I could see her unique and soulful point of view as a photographer and I was excited to shoot this theme with her, since I don't have many of these types of images in my own portfolio.

More coming from this shoot!

Visit Aileen's website, her work is so beautiful! [link]

As a fan of Greek mythology my mind immediately leapt to Hera when I saw this and the other shots. This one looks like the moment she's found out Zeus has had another mortal woman again...

I love the photo, but I have to ask; did you use a lot of foundation makeup or anything to really lessen your pores and stuff? It may just be a trick of the lighting mixing with fabulous makeup skills, but your eyes and skin just look far more painted than photographed right here. The lips too, but those I know are just because they're gold and shiny which is unnatural to see normally as it is.

I ask because I do photography myself, and I can see that there's definitely some light that was off to your right, and perhaps some from below too if what I'm seeing in your eyes is the reflection. A ring light, perhaps. Because once again, not a normal lighting pattern to see in eyes.

And if it is a trick of the light, I'd like very much to work towards replicating it, because it is a beautiful quality of light that really does do wonders for the photo.

As for why the photo looks painterly--as the sunlight bounced of the bright cement towards her face it creates the bright lighting that lights the side of her face. The shadows were a bit washed out in-camera so I restored a bit of the shadows that contour the nose and the left edge of her face in Lightroom.

There are still pores that are visible within the full-sized image, as sometimes thicker, photo-ready make-up produces the visibility of larger pores. However, that can be masked by using some skin-smoothing techniques in Photoshop. Pores are not visible here because of the smaller size.

The "fill" light you are seeing on the right side is natural sunlight. The dominant light on left side is from the bright concrete. No backlight/hairlight is present because of the tree/thick foliage behind her.

Yaya already has a flawless complexion, so there wasn't much skin retouching needed to be done in post. The lighting scenario you are inquiring about really is just having the model under a shaded tree during harsh sunlight. The harsh sunlight reflected off the concrete trail we shot directly next to, producing the rim-lit effect you see in her eyes, as well as the lighting of her face, since I made her turn her head in that direction.

Hope that clarifies that for you :)

That definitely does clarify. I'd have never figured it was concrete though, because I live in an area without it, so I forget it exists! LOL It's fun how everyday objects can be so helpful though. C:

Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate it greatly. C:

No problem! Since we shot in an industrialized Los Angeles, the parks still managed to have concrete/dirt walkways.

That just blows my mind to think of. Saratoga is a bit more city-esque, but we're lucky to have some red brick in the park. Perhaps if I ever do an outdoor shoot in Albany I might get to play with pale concrete. C:

In the mean time, I bet I could achieve a similar effect with a big piece of white foamboard. Because it is very ethereal and stunning.

Wow. Everything in this is gorgeous! Major props for the costume. I love how wildly creative your costume is, and yet how at the same time it feels so classic. You're right, the atmosphere of melancholy is phenomenal. You are so beautiful, combining something haunting with a sense of dignity. Awesome!
