I made a video last night, giving out the most important advice to any cosplayer: Practicing your Google Fu.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9B-pW…

If you want to cosplay, you have to commit to doing research. For hours. Days. Weeks! The internet is full of answers to your questions, there are tutorials on how to make XYZ, youtube videos teaching you new skills, experienced cosplayers tallking in detail about how they made their costumes, where to get the best materials... The information you need is out there and if you practice your Google Fu, you will learn how to make costumes.
There are no shortcuts, you have to do your research. And enjoy that process. Be curious and inquisitive and adventurous! Have fun learning! Then put your knowledge to the test and make a costume. It's an incredibly rewarding and fun thing, and if you are a Google Fu master, half of your costume work is already done!!

Practice that Google Fu.

Personally, I'd rather use the DuckDuckGo search engine = Duck Fu (which actually sounds better, I think)

Perfect Chun-Li. Now you just need to learn to kick fast enough several times in a row. And Kioken is going to take thirty years to project from your hands but, get to it anyway! :D :D :D :D <3
Beautiful.

haha you are so right <3!
So many people ask me questions about where I bought a wig or if I can make a tutorial about xxx....it all already excists soemwhere in the internet.
People just have to stop being too lazy to find it v.v

Asking someone directly is not being lazy, it's the single most obvious action to be immediately taken.
Who sees something he likes and then goes "oh my gosh I really have to do some hours of googling now to find information on this, instead of trying to ask that person and maybe receive relevant advise in a timely and efficient manner! Because that would be lazy."

well it does not take "a few hours" to find f.e. a keyblade tutorial...you find it after you just pressed enter on google . ....
goes much faster than to wait for the answer of the person that links you the keyblade tutorial XD;

Sorry for the intromission, but I don't really agree. When you've done your research unsuccesfully or it's a very particular fabric/item/wig colour we're talking about, I agree, don't be shy and try asking the cosplayers! They are no gods you can't approach, try, be nice and polite with your questions and most of the times they will be happy to help!
But what Calssara was talking about is a completely different thing. Well known cosplayers like her, or Yaya herself, receive tons of messages like "Where did you buy your costume?" "I need that plaid skirt where can I buy it?" "Tell me where to buy coloured contact lenses" or super basic stuff like that. They don't even read the description that says you've made that costume, sewn that skirt, they don't take their time to google and discover there are tons of online shops for coloured contacts and you have to surf them, search for reviews, compare photos etc. There's a lot of difference between "Sorry for bothering you, but I've been searching for that yellow and green striped stockings for ages, can I ask you where did you find them? I understand if you don't want to tell or you're too busy to reply!" and "Cool I want one link me the shop".

This is exactly where I'm at right now with my current costume.  Since I don't have anyone near me that cosplays, I have been googling, you tubing, and picking other cosplayer's brains online and at conventions for advice.  It has all been wonderful help so far.

Damn, I do not know how you do it.  Being in front of a crowd of people, on display for them to pick at your work, having them point out every and every flaw...  Yeah, I stay behind my camera. and let people pick at the flaws in my photographs over the internet.  That way I do not have to see & hear them while they do it.
